Alongside this exciting holistic and community-centered online symposium, we have created a special experience for up to 16 Black women who are m/others and active professionals in the industry to participate in a *stipend Black-only mentored weekend residency experience.
This residency is for Black women-identified and non-binary parents who are active in their role as m/others alongside being content creators, filmmakers, producers, writers, directors, crew, assistants, editors, etc. within the film and media arts industries in Canada.
Successful residency applicants will receive a $350 stipend for their full participation in the weekend residency, with free access to the public symposium.
The residency is made up of:
a live support network and mentorship opportunity taking place for two hours over three consecutive weekends leading up to M/other’s day.
free VIP access to symposium presentations
Plus a private Black-only platform for ongoing community connection and mentor access
Symposiums highlights:
The M/othering In the Industry Symposium features three stellar panels:
Thriving Mamas -
Thriving Mamas is a high-energy kick-off event featuring mamas who have been making it work in the industry. Panelists will share personal stories of inspiration, self-advocacy, and how they’ve been thriving while centering their family’s needs.
Monetizing M/otherhood -
Monetizing M/otherhood gets into the nuts and bolts of guest speakers’ experiences by centering the theme of m/othering in their work - from creating TV series and children’s programming, to launching family-friendly production companies, and offering case studies and resources.
Strategies for Change -
Strategies for Change will take us from identifying barriers faced by working m/others in the industry, to naming actionable solutions for change. Industry insiders and leaders will discuss opportunities and policies to normalize childcare in the budget line and create family-friendly workplaces.
PARTICIPANT PROFILE:
Open to all. Join the conversation. Talk to Experts. Help Change the Industry for the Better. Celebrate m/others in Film and Television. Build Community.
General symposium tickets are $35 per panel or $50 for all three.
Proceeds go towards supporting Black Women Film! Canada operations
Applicants must be available for all weekend dates.
“The pandemic has really shone a fierce light on the intensely challenging and inspiring work that is being done by Black women, trans and non-binary parents to make it all happen and we’d like to celebrate and support this reality by creating a symposium that goes above and beyond to offer a mentored residency and a series of public presentations that will provide real support for m/others and facilitate change in the industry.”
