BLACK WOMEN FILM! CANADA IS COMING TO WINNIPEG

Montreal. — Wednesday, March 12, 2025. – In celebration of our 10th anniversary and the National Women’s Day, Black Women Film! Canada (BWF! Canada) is proud to announce the launch of a new national program, Reel Change for Black and Afro-Indigenous Women in Film & Media, which will launch in Winnipeg on March 21, 2025 at Urban Shaman Centre.

Funded by the Federal Ministry of Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE), this exciting bilingual initiative was launched in Montreal this past January. It is designed to support Black women producers in thriving within the film and tv industry while collaborating with local leaders and productions companies to create more inclusive working environments that foster the long-term success of Black women, non-binary, and trans women producers at every stage of media and film production across Canada.

“Reel Change” is a 17-month systematic change program that focuses on supporting Black women producers to thrive in the industry and works with industry leaders to create more inclusive working environments that support the lasting engagement of Black women-identified, non-binary, and trans women producers at every stage of media and film production across Canada.

To further this goal, BWF! Canada will embark on a cross-Canada tour across four cities – Montreal, Halifax, Vancouver and Winnipeg – featuring a range of engaging activities, including:

National Visioning Sessions by invitation, bringing together Black women in the industry (January to March 2025)
Equity & Innovation Masterclasses on equity and innovation for mentors, speakers, and local production companies supporting participants (March to December 2025)
Regional Producer Residencies (April 2025 – February 2026)
Creation of Educational Industry Videos (March 2025 – February 2026)
National Gathering and Pitch Project (June 2026)

BLACK WOMEN FILM! CANADA ARRIVE À WINNIPEG

Montréal. — Le mercredi 12 mars 2025. Dans le cadre du 10e anniversaire et de la Journée internationale des droits des femmes, Black Women Film! Canada (BWF! Canada) est fier d’annoncer le lancement d’un nouveau programme national, Reel Change for Black Women in Film & Media, à Winnipeg , le 21 mars 2025 au Centre Urban Shaman.

Financée par le ministère fédéral des Femmes et de l’Égalité des genres du Canada (WAGE), cette initiative bilingue passionnante a été lancée à Montréal en janvier dernier. Elle vise à soutenir les productrice et créatrices afro-descendantes et afro-autochtones, trans noires et les personnes non binaires pour qu’elles s’épanouissent dans l’industrie, tout en collaborant avec des leaders afin de créer des environnements de travail plus inclusifs et de favoriser le succès à long terme de ces productrices, à chaque étape de la production médiatique et cinématographique.

« Reel Change » est un programme de changement systémique de 17 mois qui vise à soutenir ces créatrices afin qu'elles prospèrent dans l'industrie. Il collabore avec des leaders et des boîtes de productions locales du secteur pour créer des environnements de travail plus inclusifs, favorisant l'engagement durable de ces productrices à chaque étape de la production médiatique et cinématographique à travers le Canada.

Pour ce faire, BWF! Canada organise une tournée dans quatre villes à travers le pays – Montréal, Halifax, Vancouver et Winnipeg – proposant une série d’activités, notamment :

Des séances de réflexion nationales sur invitation, réunissant des femmes noires de l'industrie (janvier à mars 2025).
Des classes de maître sur l’équité et l’innovation, destinées aux mentors, conférenciers et boîtes de production locales qui accompagneront les participantes (mars à décembre 2025).
Des stages régionaux dans des boîtes de production (avril 2025 à février 2026).
La création de vidéos de formation destinées à l’industrie (mars 2025 à février 2026).
Une rencontre nationale et un concours de pitch réunissant les participantes et partenaires (juin 2026).

En unissant les parties prenantes et les leaders de l’industrie, BWF! Canada s’engage à instaurer un changement positif et durable dans le paysage cinématographique et médiatique canadien.

10TH ANNIVERSARY WITH LAUNCH OF

'REEL CHANGE PROGRAM'

NEW NATIONAL PROGRAM INITIATIVE SUPPORTED

Montreal, Wednesday January 22, 2025. - To celebrate our upcoming 10th anniversary, Black Women Film Canada! (BWF) is proud to announce the creation of a new national program Reel Change for Black Women in Film & Media to be held in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Halifax, and Montreal.

Funded by the federal Ministry of Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE), this exciting new bilingual program launched in Montreal on January 16, 2025. It focuses on supporting Black women producers to thrive in the industry and works with industry leaders to create more inclusive working environments that support the lasting success of Black Women identified, non-binary, and trans women producers at every stage of media and film production across Canada.

Reel Change for Black Women in Film & Media - What’s it all about?

In 2023, the Canadian Government acknowledged the continued disparities faced by Black women in the media and film industries. In response, 'Reel Change' was developed as a 17-month systematic change program designed to enhance Black women's economic security by addressing the obstacles that hinder access to leadership and decision-making roles, while supporting the development of new film and media initiatives.

To achieve this goal, BWF! Canada will host this program in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Halifax, and Montreal welcoming participants, mentors and industry to get involved from across Canada.

Activities include:

National Visioning Sessions with Black industry leaders (Jan - March 2025)
Equity & Innovation Masterclasses for Industry Mentors (March 2025 - Dec 2025)
Regional Producer Residencies (April 2025 - Feb 2026)
Creation of educational industry videos (March 2025 - Feb 2026)
National Gathering and Presentation (June 2026)

By joining forces with community stakeholders and industry leaders, BWF! Canada aims to create lasting, positive change within the Canadian film and media landscape.

When I first launched this exciting initiative in 2015 I didn’t realize what an important catalyst for positive change we would become for our community and across the industry as whole. BWF! Canada welcomes Sabine Daniel - New National Programs Manager

In addition, BWF! Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Sabine Daniel as the National Program Manager with extensive experience in the film and media sector, Ms. Daniel brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion within the industry.

Expanding beyond Toronto with a New Space in Montreal

In alignment with the 'Reel Change' initiative, BWF! Canada, while continuing to deliver programming in Toronto, is excited to be expanding our reach with the opening of a new space in Montreal. This new location will serve as the hub for Reel Change program activities in both official languages, as well as a resource center and co-work space for our producer residency participants.

This year Toronto participants will be given 2 months accommodation, travel and a stipend to participate in the Reel Change programming in the province of their choice as a way of developing projects and networks nationally.

Who is Black Women Film! Canada?

Founded by Ella Cooper, Black Women Film is a Toronto based not for profit organization with programming that spans across Canada. Our work is transformational, motivational and dedicated to providing a community for Black women in film and media. We strive to disrupt and change the future of our dominant visual culture while supporting Black women in taking leadership roles across all aspects of the industry. To date Black Women Film participants and staff have joined our programs from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Black Women Film acts as a springboard to provide Black media professionals with access to opportunities alongside skill development, peer networks, industry contacts, festival delegation and tailored pitch opportunities. Every year we offer masterclasses, retreats, residencies, networking, screenings, an industry directory and a film camp to Black women at all stages of their careers. Financé par le ministère des Femmes et de l’Égalité des genres (gouvernement fédéral), ce programme bilingue innovateur a été lancé à Montréal le 16 janvier 2025. Son objectif? Supporter les femmes d’industrie afro-descendantes à exceller et faire la promotion d’environnements de travail plus sécuritaires et inclusive qui encourage la présence à long terms de femmes s’identifiant comme noires, de personnes non binaires et de femmes trans à chaque étape de la production cinématographique et médiatique, partout au Canada.

À propos de Reel Change

En 2023, le gouvernement du Canada a reconnu les inégalités historiques auxquelles font face les femmes noires dans les industries du film et des médias. C’est ce qui a mené à l’élaboration de Reel Change comme moteur de changement systémique, d’une durée de 17 mois, qui vise à renforcer la sécurité économique des femmes noires en traitant des obstacles aux rôles de leadership et de prise de décision, tout en appuyant la création de nouveaux projets cinématographiques et médiatiques.

Pour atteindre ces objectifs, BWF! Canada sera l’hôte des activités du programme à Winnipeg, Vancouver, Halifax et Montréal pour des participantes de partout au Canada.

Lorsque j’ai fondé l’organisation en 2015, je ne me suis pas rendu compte de l’importance que ce catalyseur de changement positif viendrait prendre dans notre communauté et dans l’ensemble de l’industrie. Nous sommes la seule organisation de son genre à offrir des services exclusivement aux femmes s’identifiant comme noires et nous avons vu nos anciennes participantes vraiment prendre leur envol après avoir passé par nos programmes. Il est extrêmement gratifiant d’élargir notre portée de cette façon, d’une manière qui vise à apporter des changements durables et systémiques à notre industrie », dit Ella Cooper, directrice générale et fondatrice de BWF! BWF! CANADA ACCUEILLE SABINE DANIEL — NOUVELLE DIRECTRICE DES PROGRAMMES NATIONAUX

De plus, BWF! Canada est heureuse d’annoncer la nomination de Sabine Daniel comme directrice des programmes nationaux, dont Reel Change. Dépasser les frontières de Toronto avec un nouvel espace à Montréal

Compte tenu de l’initiative Reel Change, BWF! Canada, tout en continuant à offrir de la programmation à Toronto, est heureuse de grandir et d’ouvrir les portes d’un nouvel espace à Montréal. Ce nouvel espace servira de carrefour pour les activités du programme Reel Change dans les deux langues officielles, ainsi que de centre de ressources et de lieu de travail en commun pour les participantes à notre programme de stage en production.

BWF! Canada sert de tremplin pour permettre aux professionnelles noires des médias de se perfectionner, de tisser des liens, de se faire des contacts au sein de l’industrie, d’assister à des festivals et d’avoir l’occasion de faire des présentations de projet ciblées. Chaque année, elle offre des classes de maître, des séminaires, des stages, du réseautage, des séances de visionnement, un répertoire de l’industrie et une retraite à thème cinématographique pour les femmes noires, qu’elles soient débutantes ou expertes.
